Think of the header tag as something that should go around a title and then follow it up with a good description which also has your keywords in it. This way you'll be giving a decent one two punch to Google and basically saying "Yo, I did this right now rank me up!" lol
Also, it's not an overnight type of thing. Optimizing your pages correctly will just put you on an even playing field with your tough competition. Yeah, I had my H1 tags optimized incorrectly by having it in the logo and either one or less on the page aside from that (read my comment here for more).
