I find over use of big words too much sometimes

I like to read and get up on my information a lot if I feel I can really learn from it and value what I am reading then I won't hesitate to read and take my time understanding what I read but I feel some times that I read certain articles and the writers are doing to much by putting so many unnecessary big words in there articles words that some times I don't even know the meaning for example people will use words like metamorphosis instead of just finding a simpler way to use the word change lol I find writers like that a bit excessive what do you guys think?

Sometimes I see the same thing, and yes it does get annoying sometimes. It's like they're trying to use big words just to show people they are smart, which doesn't always work.

One thing that really annoys me is when I see "We use proprietary systems that no one else is using" and that pretty much turns me off of a system or service because it's complete bullsh*t. I actually saw someone push an SEO service with "proprietary" systems in place to increase the users search engine rankings and they had the balls to give a guarantee lmao

No one can give a guarantee on something like this because they don't work for Google. It does convince a lot of people because they don't know any better. Fancy wording mixed with high quality images and an infograph here and there will convince almost anyone to join or sign up for a monthly fee. I know I've used some fancy wording in the past, but never to the extent where people would think "This guy is just trying to impress his digital girlfriend with all these big words" or something along those lines.

The excessive use of big words is ok when it's in a novel and the writer is known for a certain style. I've read plenty of books that pull me in by just using a few crazy sounding words and then I end up binge reading until I'm done.

I'm not knocking anyone with an English degree or someone who writes at a higher level than most, but it does get annoying when you feel that someone is searching through the dictionary just to find a crazy, difficult to understand, word just to put in every sentence

Oh I am with you 100% on this one Jkeyz2!

My first language is English and I have quite a good vocabulary so when I am reading a book or a website article and I get lost by the big words I get seriously annoyed. I don't continue with reading then if I am going to struggle to even understand what I am reading.

It is one thing if I am doing a course for example and I need to constantly look up words in a dictionary. This is understandable. If I am reading a fiction book or an article on how to do something I want to understand it when I read it. Yes I expect to not understand the occasional word and usually I can understand the gist of it from the rest of the content or the sentence.

I personally like reading "big words" I always find new ones I that I don't know their meaning. I have to actually search the meaning on Google. This helps me develop my vocabulary and in essence, will help me grow as a content builder.
Certain niches need a touch of snobbism, so knowing what words and phrases to use can help a lot! And there are plenty of fancy clients out there.
Though I have to agree, when selling a service, you need to be simple and direct so anyone can understand what you are offering. You can't use only scientific or professional related content, potential clients outside the industry won't have a clue.

Using big words to me isn't bad because what essence of learning the big word if we can't use them.There are not in the English vocabulary for nothing but the problem should be excessive use of it in a single write up.

Big words can be used in a write up because I love to learn new words but not excessively.

Hi jkeyz2 thanks for your question. Yes, I do really agree with you. I usually read from internet basis of my necessary for learning something's. And I saw many content writer used so many complex word or big word unnecessarily, which really sometimes difficult to understanding proper meaning. Basically who is not from English speaking country, they get difficulties for understanding actual meaning. So, I feel this is not good quality of writing. I think everybody need to understand what were you write. If you use horrible word to show your smartness, that is not a quality writer thinking. Quality content writer always try to write simple and details for everyone for every culture.

LOL Ajlancer, it can also be highly annoying for English speaking people too! Quality writers are the ones who write for their audience, with the purpose of making the content interesting and engaging. Part of this is writing in a way that will be understood.

I can't be bothered if I have to keep looking back after reading a sentence and try figure out what they are saying. What is the point in this?

As a writer I try to bear in mind that the most important aspect is readability. So you need to consider that a good part of the people who will be reading the content or the article are probably not native English speakers. So using difficult words or jargon is going to drive them away rather than encourage them to keep reading. Therefore it is important to try to opt for simple words which are easily understood. On the other hand if it is a technical article, you may use big words or technical ones, as probably the readers will know their meaning.

Sometimes i use big words, but not too often. My vocabulary is quite vast, so I can actually use a lot of big words but would rather not. The reason behind this is because a lot of people will have no idea what I am talking about and wouldn't want to communicate to me. In my early days of schooling English was one of my favorite subjects and I always excelled. When I was in elementary school, in 5th grade, I had the vocabulary of a college student. My vocabulary here probably doesn't reflect that however I don't see a reason as to why it should.

When I encounter an article with a big word that I needed a dictionary to understand, that's fine because I am learning something. Like yesterday, I chanced upon this word - hypnopompic. Now, I know what it's called when you suddenly wake up and your senses are still lingering in that dream you just had. But encountering big words in an article from time to time, I don't think I would clearly understand what the article is all about because I would be busy in understanding the meaning of those words. I always prefer simple words when I read an article.

I think this happens for many writers. They use some big words in order to attract the users. But people have low attention span these days. And you can see that using too many big words surely have their own share of issues. You may need to work on the way things work out. So you may understand that big words often require people to write the content.

I agree with you that in most cases what matter is not the big the words used in writing a content is, but on the impact, such content would have to the intended parties that would be sparing their time to read it. If your articles are written in such a way that even a kid can read and understand, then I think you've succeeded in passing a great message across.
