What foruming software is the best for a large forum today?

Hello guys. There are many forum softwares out there today. Some old that are still good, some new that look okay. But which one is the best for a large forum? Does a large forum need to have a lot of features for the users of it or do features not really matter that much? I've been looking at some forum software reviews and comparisons and most are saying that XenForo and IPBoard are the best 2 of them all followed by VBulletin. Then in some other reviews and comparisons, some say that phpBB is the best next to MyBB. I've been leaning towards XenForo but it's definitely the most priciest of them all. Do you have any experience in this on which one is the best for a large forum or one you can personally recommend for a large forum?

Also, another thing, some people sell their forum licenses. Is this allowed by the forum script developers? Is it worth doing that or just buying the license yourself?

From personal experience I don't feel myself that forum software needs to have a lot of features to attract people, it's all about the content on the forum over the features that you provide. A forum with a lot of fresh and new content is always better than a forum with a lot of features and hardly any content. If I was to choose a best forum software for a large forum today I would more than likely choose Xenforo due to it's affordability but also due to the fact that it is an easy forum software to use and also because if you did want the extra features later on when your forum was more busy you have those there available.

I had a forum on my one website a while back but I have no idea how it was set up because my web developers did that all for me.

Do you think that having a forum added to your website is a great way to generate more content and improve rankings? Surely forums take a massive amount of work? I remember giving up on my forum simply because most of the time I felt like I was talking to empty space, and damn was there an echo!

I found it taking up so much of my time that I just couldn't keep up with it because my main business was an online store. I had so much hope for a really cool mommy forum but it just never happened What foruming software is the best for a large forum today?

As far as I know XenForo is the best thing money can buy when it comes to current forum software. I think VBulletin is pretty much outdated and from another era altogether. phpBB and MyBB are pretty much the best free options you can choose. But yet again, don't expect nothing to modern, just plain old forum software similar with what existed 10 years ago.

Giving the fact the forums are not that popular anymore,developing a new forum nowadays means you really found a good niche or you have a good idea. That's why I believe you most go with the best and the latest and that's XenForo.

I think all the different types are basically the same, but free stuff will require more elbow grease on the part of the owner, assuming you're not paying someone else to help. For instance, to put a logo on a phpBB or MyBB setup you will have to go in and manually mess with the code. Anyway, there is an exception, though. Simple Machines (SMF) has uploaders for mods, banners, and themes. That can be a big help for newbies and make things quicker for the more experienced.
