What is the difference between SEO and SEM? I already know a lot about SEO but have not really heard that much about SEM. What does SEM do? Is SEO a part of the whole SEM process?

I think the SEM or search engine marketing is the advertising that you place on the search engine that can be seen by the searchers. For example your niche is a clothing line that when someone searches for clothing line your site will appear on the right side of the search list because it is advertised there. It looks like SEO is the in thing now and SEM is just being born at least in my knowledge. If we focus on SEO, we can increase the ranking of the website in the search list of the search engines. For SEM, we rely on the ranking of our website for added traffic. What if the website ranking is way below?
