If the content on both websites is similar, I recommend you have just one big website. I think that several small sites could help you diversify, and that could be beneficial as you are going to target more users who might be interested in different things or subjects. If however you have one big site you are going to focus solely on it, and that tends to deliver better results as you do not have to fragment neither your time, nor your efforts.
