Should we still use press releases for the SEO and Online Marketing?

Over the last couple years we've seen a few big updates to Googles search algorithm and we were either hit with a rankings drop or saw a spike. Some people didn't know what was going on because they've never done SEO so they were already low in the rankings lol. But what about Press Releases? Can they still have an affect on SEO and Online Marketing? Will they work post Penguin and Panda or are they just pointless services to get "the word" out about your website or services?

Well in my honest opinion I think they are pretty pointless in terms of both SEO and Online Marketing, and I'll say why.

Same Articles Everywhere: The same article will get published to hundreds of "news" websites and even if you do get a live link on these websites, you probably won't see any clicks because the readers of the site are pretty niche specific. The readers most likely want to see something that is Breaking News and not something about your website you just launched.
You Don't Hit The Good Sites: Sure you can get your links on high DA and PR websites, but you'll never get on the really good ones where the real traffic is. The kinds of websites like TechCrunch, Hawker and HuffingtonPost. You have to pay people to do individual posts on these types of websites, and they are not cheap at all. If you don't want to pay for these type of posts you can contact them directly, but good luck getting a response. They most likely get hundreds of people per day asking for a guest post and I'm sure they don't have enough time to sift through all these emails to find your website, which is probably just like another one that was pitched in a previous email that was looked over.
They Don't Hurt, But They Don't Help Either: A press release doesn't necessarily help your rankings, sales or traffic. But on the other hand it won't hurt any of them either. You can safely add press release links to your disavow tool and sleep well at night because they won't help you anyway lol.

These days press releases are branding, validation, and credibility tools for companies, not SEO tools. I use social media than press release to word out. I don't think press releases should be used with the intention of SEO strategy. I get backlinks for my website from social medias rather than press releases.

I believe that press releases are ancient forms of link building BUT and this is a big but: I think they are still relevant for local searches, therefore, businesses that target local results.

Google still puts a lot of weight on businesses that get mentioned on a local level. So if you are in the business of housing renovations for example and you offer such services on a local level and you have a lot of press articles talking about you and your area and pointing a link to your websites, I'm pretty confided your local rankings will improve.

Otherwise if we are talking about very generic keywords that have no direct link with local searches, then yeah, press releases are pretty pointless nowadays.

In the olden days, the press release is very important for a business although it is used mostly by events like a concert which is also a business anyway. But in the online world, I don’t think the press releases matters much, i.e. if we don’t consider blogs as a form of press release. Some popular bloggers are called influencers because when they write a blog about your business, it will certainly get attention from the myriads of followers of the popular blogger.
