    Loads of people here know what meta tags are and how to use them, so if you're one of them, this post probably isn't for you. Sorry What meta tags are and how you should use them.

    A meta tag is something within your code that helps label your website in a way that the search engines can read your snippets of text and index you wherever possible.

    The main meta tags are the Title, Description and Keywords. There are actually a few other meta tags that people look over a lot and those are Robots and Copyright.


    Here's a brief overview of the meta titles and how to use them.
    1. Title Meta Tag: The title meta tag is the first line of offense when it comes to increasing your search engine rankings. You'll want to get a keyword into your title so that Google, Yahoo! and Bing will give you a better ranking among the SERPs for that specific keyword.

    2. Description Meta Tag: You can add an optimized snippet of text so the search engines can use it as the very same snippet that shows in the search results. You'll want to get the same keyword in here that you used in the title for the best SEO affect. Now there is no guarantee that the search engines will use the text in your description, but it can't hurt to optimize it What meta tags are and how you should use them.

    3. Keywords Tag: The keywords tag is used for where you want to put the keywords your website or page is about. This tag isn't used much for the bigger search engines, but some smaller engines still rely on the keyword tags so you should never leave them out.

    4. Robots Tag: The robots tag is used to show the search engines whether you want your website to be index or noindex. This means that if the search engine spiders do get to your website they will know if you want it indexable or not. If your Robots tag is set to noindex then you will never show up in the search results. If you're running a business and you want online sales, you definitely want your website to be indexable What meta tags are and how you should use them.

    5. Copyright: This tag does exactly what you think, it shows that something on your page, or all of it, is copywritten. There aren't too many people who still use this tag, but again, treat it just like the keywords tag and add it in because you don't know what search engines will use it What meta tags are and how you should use them.

    Razzy thank you for another great post. I am aware of all of those meta tags except for the Copyright one. Can you please explain the Copyright meta tag a bit more? Why would I use this and what benefits would it have for me?

    I don't even remember seeing that option. I am going to have to go and have a look to see where that is.

    The only meta tags that matter from an SEO point of view is the title tag and the meta description. The robots tag you are going to use only when you don't want crawlers to follow certain pages or index certain pages.

    The keyword tags are useless, even for smaller search engines. Even if they are somehow significant, ca you name me at least one small search engines that still uses meta keywords and you can actually get some relevant traffic from it? Probably not, the most important secondary search engines like Yahoo and Bing are all evolved enough and dropped the meta keywords tag.

    I agree with you, the keywords meta tag is pointless. Most search engines create the keywords by relevance of the title, body text, along with other engine data. However, I still do use the keywords tag, mostly for my own purposes, just to give the page keywords. Some platforms actually use the keywords tag to generate keywords if you were to ever submit your site to an online directory, or something like that.

    The robots tag is another one that people use incorrectly. I noticed some pages even include the "revisit after" tag, thinking the crawler will revisit their site in the number of days they set it for.. which is very untrue. I don't think the search engines even consider that tag anymore, if they ever did at all.
