Long descriptive domain names Vs Short and catchy domain names

I'm at a loss at what I'm gonna use as domain name for my new website. I plan for it to be a business website with articles regarding finance, accounting and such. I think I'm gonna focus more on accounting because that's my forte.

Now I'm at a loss whether I should make the domain name short and catchy, similar to domain names like Yahoo or Facebook or IGN or pcmag. Short domain names make it easier for people to remember. However, I also read from o one guide that a domain name that is long and descriptive is the way to go since it has an effect on SEO especially if you put tags in the domain name.

What do you think? Should I go for short or long? Should I go for catchy or descriptive?

Domains are really important for SEO, but they're not the only factor. The important thing is indentifying your website both to people and search engines.

What ever people can remember that stands out works. Short and Catchy is prefered, not always available or needed.

Another thing to consier is uniqueness. If you choose a choose a short catchy name with no search competition, you'll rank for it quickly which can be better for customers finding you long term as you build reputation.

If you want to get a domain name for your business you should consider having your business as the domain name. This helps to establish your business brand. In case your business name is already taken consider using another extension. For example, if your name for your business is already taken for dot com, try to look into dot net, you can even try new extensions such as dot biz or dot online.
You shouls always settle for catchy names for your domain. catchy names are easy to remember.

Yes, I think it might be helpful to have your business name as the domain name so people could look it up easily and they would also remember it. I think short and catchy names are also the best.

Short and catchy names are perfect for domain names. There is no need to hand on with dot com and compromising with the name it the dot com you want is already taken. Two years ago, I wanted Travel Nepal as a domain name, but the dot com was already taken. I played with words and every word I tried were taken. Therefore I settled with ezine Nepal dot com. I wish I had tried other options like club, online website etc. Extension does not really matter.

The short and catchy domain name is definitely more effective for a business website. However, it’s not only being short and catchy but it should also be meaningful to your business. As per the suggestion of @Vinaya, why not consider your business to be the domain name? At least the domain name is already descriptive when it is the name of your business. I remember that Pizza Hut became more popular here than Shakey’s simply because Pizza Hut is more descriptive and meaningful vis-à-vis the business. With the domain name, that case is also applicable.

Personally, for all my blogs, my first idea for getting a domain name is to craft a catchy name.it is not necessarily about the length of a domain name.
A domain name might be long but it has a boring name which makes intending readers to totally ignore it but a domain can be short but with an inviting domain name and it will arouse one's interest.
so get any length of a domain name but making it inviting.

I think short and catchy domain name are good. You can make use of the description and long. You need to consider long names only when you are getting into niche market. I personally do not prefer short names when into micro niche site. That should make things easier. I have noticed that short domains for brands can be really good. That's one thing to check out here.

I always prefer using short and catchy domain names. Let's face it. People will not remember your domain's name if it's too long... good for SEO or not, they won't remember it. You can easily do other SEO methods and just take the most logical choice of short domain name.

How many successful websites do you personally use or know that have an uber long name? None. There's your answer

If you want good traffic, I suggest you go for short and straight forward domain names. It is easier for your readers to remember your short and catchy domain name. Don't add in the "S" because some people do not know your website has the "S" or not. For example "recipeblog" or "recipesblog" . Very often, readers will get the wrong spelling and end up giving up searching for your site.

I'm with short and catchy but it would be good that you give the idea of your website right away with the short phrase. I am thinking about making a gaming blog that also includes the word game in it to be easily identifiable. I hope it does well for SEO.

It's best to use short and straight forward domain names. You do not want the client to find it hard to remember your site. It is important to make it relevant to your business type and product. Being too general is not great either.

By my choice you have to select one keyword based domain name which will be easy and short. From my experience the short name domain will make you popular on easy way. Recently I had been bought a domain name with a partner and has been working with website related works. Didn't started the promotion yet now but also getting huge visitors every day for the short name of domain.

Not all long domains are hard to remember. It depends on the words. However, though, you would want to avoid dashes and also make sure that you're emphasizing the domain extension if it' s not a .com. For instance, "Jim's Workout Place" should be advertised as the same name if it's a .com. However, though, if the domain is JimsWorkoutPlace.biz, then it should be advertised as "JimsWorkoutPlace.biz".

I think that short and catchy ALWAYS beats out longwinded and elaborate. You want this thing to be able to look good on a t-shirt or to fit on a ballcap or bumpersticker and be easily readable and memorable. I get visually turned off scanning over a foot long domain name. Plus, if your business is getting traffic in any way because of word of mouth, you want people, customers, to be able to easily say your memorable domain name to their friends, family, and colleagues.

I prefer short and catchy domains but it all depends with what you want to get out of it. I think focusing on how to retain your readers and how to attract more should be a priority. So you should go for a short and catchy domain.

I think it is the standard choice of web owners to have a short and catchy domain name. But it is not easy to think of one with the huge number of existing domains, it is so hard to find a free name that is short and catchy. When my husband was a consultant for an organization, they had a hard time in choosing a name because the catchy and descriptive names that they came up for the organization were already bought.
