Google alerts are also really good for online reputation management purposes. You can track your own domain name and see when someone is talking about it. You can then log onto whatever website the content is on, or register an account, and comment back in a professional way either thanking the user or defending yourself without getting angry
I remember a long time ago I was watching a documentary about indie games and one of the guys had a load of Google alerts set up for his up coming game. He would get an alert and log in or register, then comment, within 30 minutes of the post. I remember they said something along the lines of "His Google alerts must have been strategically set up because he was always commenting back, no matter the website, within 30 minutes of the post going live" lol
