How difficult is it to manage a blog / website?

I think there are lot of things that go behind the blog management. And that's one reason people hire the VA and backend people.

Take these examples.

1. Yearly domain and the hosting charges.
2. Managing updates of plugin and CMS.
3. Updating theme regularly.
4. Moderating comments.
5. Writing content.
6. Promoting content.
7. Adding backlinks from other places to the blog.

These 7 points have a lot of work. And you can't do this overnight. And you have to work harder to manage the website. In turn this adds up any day. And so on that point you can see that managing the blog is not going to be that easy. We have to learn from that part.

Great response here. I would also add managing social media accounts to increase traffic at blog. I have often forgotten my domain charge at my bank and had it hit my bank account without me expecting or budgeting for it to. That is definitely a sign of poor management on my part and poor record keeping. My main issue is keeping up with writing a decent post and content every week! I really need to set up more backlinks as well. Good post and checklist here.

I think managing a. blog is not easy when all the work involved from .making the blog to start posting. Trying to get good content either you write it or pay to be written down to posting comments or using moderators and monetizing the blog.

The management is encompassing and one need to work through all of it.

I agree promoting on the social media is another step. I forgot to add it. I was thinking about other promotion. And I guess for that promotion part. People have to make sure to build a following. If they can pull that part off then surely it'd be reasonable to bring some genuine traffic to the blog or the website. I guess for each one of us it's going to be lot reasonable to adjust to that part. That's something we all have to see as well.

Considering how useful your post was, I think it is totally ok to forget a few things! Self-promotion is a bit tough, and social media can be a lot of work to keep up with. I still keep going back and forth about opening an Instagram account because just keeping up with my facebook and twitter accounts has me pretty busy every day as it is!

What I have done is I am using automation tools like dlvr.it and hootesuite. They seem to be taking care of the posting frequency. And also it takes care of the content. On that basis, I'd say that automation can save a lot of time. Though interaction part requires effort but that can be done if you have some time. Else automation of the social media account saves time.

Having to manage a blog / webiste is an extremely (I mean, a lot) complicated task and I speak from my own experience because there was a time when I tried to do that and I almost lost my sanity, haha!

Lot of tasks that can be automated. But there is definitely a limit on how much we can automated. And that's what makes the blog handling lot harder. I would say managing the website is not going to be any easy. And on that point I'd say jetpack and wp manager type plugins are lot better.

You have listed the entire difficulties associated with running websites. I have more than six websites and blogs. Renewing the domain and hosting is getting costly. When the websites are not earning much, domain renewal and hosting renewal can become a financial burden. Another major problem is associated with the promotion. If you do not promote, you will lose traffic. If you do not want to lose traffic, you need tp promote your website regularly. Promotion can cost you a lot of time.

Indeed managing the blogs is costly. You can automate wordpress updates and also set the comment moderation plugins on. But apart from that rest of the content making part. That is something you'd have to spend time on. I'd say focus one month at a time for each blog. or even a week. That should set things up.

I think the moderation of comments looks trivial but it can occupy you for the whole day when your blog is very popular. Think where there are 20 comments in a day for one of your blogs and maybe some other comments on your other recent blogs, you will need more than an hour for checking on the comments. To be honest, that is my apprehension with the blog that when there is a deluge of comments then I probably couldn’t handle the moderation by myself.

If you have blog where you regularly get new comments, that is harder. Because spam is easy to take care of but the genuine comments interaction. And it can be good for the networking with new users. I have mostly done comment moderation weekend or so times. And saved my overall involvement time.

For me, the content, although I am good at generating it, is the problem. I freelance and teach all day online, and, in the back of my mind, I am all like, "Yeah, I will get to my blog tonight--that will be awesome". Then the hours fly by, and I never seem to actually do it when I should. So, I have a discipline and time management problem, and no blog is gonna survive for very long with a manager iike that, so I need to get it together, right?

As of now regarding my planned blog, I see the hardest part is the frequency of updating. That's why my project remains in the air due to my apprehension on updates. It's such a waste to launch a blog and after sometime there will be no updates because I have no time. Maybe it's a good idea to have a blog owned and operated by a team of 3 or 4 so the updates will be assured to be on a regular basis.

Isn't 3 or 4 way too many people? I personally wouldn't want to share my own blog with that many because there are bound to be some disagreements and so on. You can easily do updates yourself and instead hire somebody for the advertising/marketing purposes so you can solely focus on the blog.

I don't think that you necessarily need moderators for a blog... unless it suddenly gets extremely successful overnight and you find yourself overwhelmed. You can easily check through the comments yourself just set to approve before accepting. The content writing is probably the most time consuming though but once you write a few articles ahead you can schedule them to be posted on certain date/time.

I think it is much harder with a website like a forum. There are many comments and threads and I can see why you'd need moderators or additional admins. So I guess, overall, it depends on the type of a website you're trying to run.

Yes, I think to have a blog of note you have to all of the above. In general, I would think the biggest and flashiest blogs are those that are professionally managed or have a lot of work that goes into them. A great blog doesn't happen by accident, that's for sure. It just is.

It's quite hard really to manage a blog or a website, most especially how you will create topics or posts that are attractive to readers and viewers of your site. Plus the technical aspects of running it. You should have at least a bit knowledge on various technical functionalities such as coding if you want to customize your site. Plus, the advertising and marketing strategies to generate more viewers to your site is really a tough job to make.

It's a difficult decision because for a lot of people they don't like to delegate tasks to other people because they like things done correctly and want to do everything by themselves. But as you said, it may be a good idea to delegate tasks because managing a blog can be extremely difficult. It's good to have other people that can manage/write for your blog whilst you are busy.

I launched my first website two years ago. It was a personal blog. Since the hosting package I had subscribed allowed me to host upto 3 websites, I launched a health blog and travel blog. Now that I had three blogs, I had to spend more time developing content for my blogs, spend more time doing SEO, and spend more time promoting and marketing. If you don't have a lot of time, it will be quite impossible to manage multiple blogs. If you outsource works, you will be also spending more. However, if you have just one blog, all you require is one or two hours every day.

Well... I think the big problem is that 1 or 2 free hours a day may not seem like much, but for those who have a very hectic pace of life this can mean almost a daily sacrifice or something similar, haha!

I am going to be the first to tell you that your wasting time, money and energy unless you have lots of time to work on your blog/website. I have a blog/forum right now and its suffering hard core right now because I am going to be moving in a month. And I just don't have the time time to sit there and spend 1~2hrs a day to maintain the website.

I am being pulled everywhere, my friends need my help, my mom needs my help and my wife needs my help. Which leaves almost no time for my website. But hopefully next month I will be in our new apartment and my wife and I can relax and I can get back to working on my website.

I kind of got off track but to sum it up unless you have lots of free time just stick to posting on other people website. Because a sure fire way to kill a website is lack of tlc for the website!

Time management is the key, particularly when it comes to updating your content. I don't own a blog or website. It seems to be trending these days so I gather there is something to be gained there. I do have several online arenas that I post to on a daily basis and even that sometimes is challenging based on my schedule. It takes practice and persistence along with some techniques and updating the technology that will help to get the job done. Sounds like a whole new era where the learning curve is stretched out into a 'learning straight' by some stretch of the imagination! It's exciting and intimidating at the same time. At least it's not a stagnant and boring feeling so I guess it's a step in the right direction.

It is quite difficult to manage a blog. The problem is that I can't spend too much time on my blog as I concentrate more on my other tasks. Thinking about the topic to write can be very difficult. I always want to write quality articles to attract more people to my blog. However, it takes more time to write good articles and also to think of good titles. The next thing is advertising. Sometimes it can be discouraging if you are spending quite a lot on advertising and yet you can't get that much traffic.

I think it really depends on the size of your website or blog and your readership. IT is certain that management of some of these projects takes up more time then you are willing to devote. That is just the way it is.

I don't think it is that hard but also depends on your niche and it is good to know a lot about it. I run a number of blogs which I am recently focusing more of my attention on my main one and my forum. Also, dedication is needed the more dedicate the more time spent on it the more you achieve.

Just consider it as work or a job that you've been hired to do. If you don't do it, your employer will say “You're fired!”

Would the employer be wrong?

In this case, the employer is you and of course, you won't fire yourself. But you also won't succeed, will you?

Not difficult if you go in with a plan. The most important thing to remember is design your site with code, and tools which YOU yourself can handle. A site which has issues the admin or owner can fix alone is an efficient one. The most embarrassing and harmful thing for any site or blog, is when it crashes and you have to keep frantically calling the IT guy or tech person to fix what's broken or malfunctioning. If it's a holiday or the technician is busy doing other jobs, your site could be down or barely functional for days. Profits will take a hit, as will traffic.

Managing a blog is not that difficult, but may be challenging. A blog will remain only visible to you if you don't know how to optimize it for search engines to find it. Getting your blog indexed by Google and other search engines is the preliminary step that must be taken to make your blog search engine optimized and visible to the world, not only to yourself. Anyone who does not know his way out of this problem will never make money online.
