Pop-Ups: How much they can be annoying for you?

Pop-ups are one of the most common means of advertising for the most diverse types of products / services around the world. The capture of visitors - and possible customers - that companies can reach through them is very high, but at the same times very annoying.

Some approaches related to pop-ups are poorly developed or excessive in a way that even causes embarrassment to users / visitors / customers because everything becomes very invasive (with each new window open, a new type of pop-up comes up).

What do you think about it?

I clearly have no problem with pop ups, and I mean moderate ones, like the ones that are used for email subscription request and minimal advertising.
But the one that irritates me most is the new tab pop up, mostly used by download pages. Nothing itches my balls like that. And once I have that experience with your site I bounce and black list it, immediately. Very annoying.

The pop-ups that are used on download pages are definitely the ones that I hate the most.

They are always excessive and always remind me of a rain of viruses (sometimes it's kinda scary). I understand the need to make money through using them when you decide to monetize your project, but you need to use common sense.

I usually experience that pop up in another tab when I would be prospecting for a software to download. It is irritating that I would not proceed and I would click out from all those windows related to that site that was offering the free download. There are many sites that has the same offer anyway so why would I persevere with such sites? I wonder if the site owner has not noticed the annoyance that the pop ups are causing.

I agree with you. Pop-ups can be pretty annoying. I know it's a way of making money and that's a good think for the owner of the page you are visiting but they are poorly developed as you describe and they are very "unexpected" and invasive so when I come up with that sort of advertisment I just close the page and forget about it.

I'm not against using them, but what's really missing is the awareness of blog / forums / sites owners when they opt for this idea. You can decide to make money this way, but you have to work with the idea that your greed can mean a very bad experience for those people who frequent the blog / forum / site.

Why not strive to maintain a balance?

I hate pop up ads in my smartphone and laptops. I guess these pop up ads are malware virus, maybe I did download videos or games from some sites that had embedded the pop up ads into the download link.

I find pop-ups very annoying. it obstruct free flow of using a site and the irritating ones are the ads popups.Why should I be clicking on what I don't have a delight for.
Let everything be on the landing page would look around for everything myself.

I really hate popups and I find them to be very annoying. They also tend to slow down my PC at times especially when I open several pages at the same. I use a pop-up blocker for that reason.

I have seen even the SEO gets hurting with popups. So never make use of the Pop up ads are going to be bad as well. And those who are collecting the popup email optin. That may work out in case of the mail optin options. So we have to consider in that case that would be something one has to consider as well. I think popup ads and the optins are not a good options. You have to find other ways for yourself in that case. You can get things properly done if you can manage like in post optins etc. That way it works lot better as well.

Popup advertisements will hurt all aspects of your site because users will not want to return to your site if they get annoyed by a large amount of popup advertisements. And because of this, you could be potentially losing out on advertisement/affiliate earnings. That will mean you have less money to develop the site which can affect the future of the site.

Pop-ups are a dead form of advertising. In fact, even the cheaper and shadier forms of traffic (For instance, the type where possibly 10,000 visitors can be bought for a dollar.) don't use them. In fact, it seems like most of these cheaper companies have moved to pop-unders and redirected traffic. However, though, I'm not sure that these types, especially pop-unders, are better - as I suspect visitors also find them annoying.

Not completely dead though. Many people make use of the email optin options. And many people use that for getting the attention of the users. So that is something people also making use of it. I think it'd be different. I think pop ups take time these days to appear due to adblocker.

I don't mind website based popups, that is where it is just a modal box that appears on the website and is not actually a new window/tab. But any popups that create a new tab or window will get immediately closed. Proper sites do not use popups anymore and that is a good thing because I think most people tend to associate popups with spam and malware. I don't even bother to see what they are or read them, they get closed straight away.

Me too I hate pop- ups really fist me off. It really distracts me so annoying. It really stresses me LOL... I don’t want to click those pop-ups that I not really interested. When pop- ups appear my personal computer suddenly became slow. I’m searching good effective pop-ups blocker soon.

I absolutely hate the pop-ups. I don't mind the normal ads since I understand that the website owners do need to make some income but the pop-ups are just so invasive. I hate those type of sites that before you even begin reading its content, you get 4 pop-ups right into your face - it annoys me and I just close everything. It also doesn't appear too safe if your website has too many so I would personally avoid it.

I am not a fan of popups. I have an ad blocker so that is something I use to eliminate pop ups. I would not want to use them on a blog or website because I don't like them myself and I am sure that others do not either.

There's no liking pop-ups for me, especially the pop-ups.

I don't have problems with the little one's that come up every now and then when you open a new page while browsing. The annoying pop-ups are those ones that entirely cover the screen of my mobile device, especially when am trying to do a download. It''s so annoying sometimes I feel like smashing the phone but then remember I'll be the one loosing if I did so????

Pop-ups, when used as something to get you to sign up for a newsletter, are no big deal. However, though, I remember a past time on the net when pop-ups would invade, crashing your screen. That's why there was a huge backlash against them and nowadays, even the cheaper traffic companies won't use them.

However, though, I could be wrong in that email sign-up things could actually be pop-unders, due to the fact pop-up blockers would block them otherwise.

I have to be honest about this - I hate pop ups because it is annoying as if the ad is being placed in front of my face. Whenever I would enter a website that has a pop-up, for sure I would exit at once. Maybe it is sort of psychological but I am really irritated that's why I cannot live with pop-ups. Another annoying style of a website is the automatic playing of a video that is an ad. That is usually done by major newspapers here. But I appreciate commercial websites with links that are blinking instead of the pop-up ad.

Yes those automated videos and the popups can be really bad. I have noticed that annoyance is something we just have to think of some of the time. I am not sure if the popups would be easy to get rid of but I guess we just make use of them for getting the optin. I have seen those video based ads which restart after scrolling. And that can be bad some of the time.

I actually don't have any issues with pop-ups, and that is because I literally never get them! For one thing, I'm usually running an adblocker in my web browser. Yes, as people who make money off of advertising, this can be morally questionable and hypocritical, but that's not the end of the story. I run my adblocker for the sole purpose of avoiding pop-ups that might contain viruses sometimes. If I'm on reliable sites like YouTube, or other trust worthy sites that I feel deserve the revenue, of course I whitelist them in the adblocker. But until a site has proven itself to me, the adblocker stays on.

Pop ups are very annoying. I have disabled pop up on my firefox therefore I don't have to deal with pop ups these days. However, in the past when I did not know about this disabling feature, I used to leave the site immediately if pop up appeared. As a publisher, Inhave tried pop up ads. Even though conversion rate for pop up ads is better, you will eventually lose traffic because visitors will never come back to your site and the new ones will also immediately leave your site.

They are annoying but I don't mind them that much. Sites need to make money so I understand that they have to resort to methods like these sometimes to do so. I do wish sometimes that they could just come up with a better solution, but if I myself can't come up with one then I can't really fault them for not having one as well, and it's not like I'm paying them to keep ads off of my screen and I am using their services so I can't get that mad at them for using these methods.

I wouldn't know because I always run a adblocker. These days way too many websites are full of ads and it's hard to sift through the content vs all the ads. And if they say disable adblocker to view their content, I just leave and never come back. Because there are thousands of other websites out there that offer the same information.

I also think this is where a lot of webmasters make a mistake, they try to get rich overnight with ads and then they drive all of their visitors away. And Adblock wouldn't even be invented today if so many people didn't overdo it with ads on their websites.

I run an adblocker as well. I get troubled with popu ups when I am on the phone or tablet and don't have an adblocker on there. It is a problem when you find some of these on there. It is just an issue when you have them. They can be annoying.

I really don't like pop-ups, as I used to think they might be trojans that will harm my computer and I did encounter that. I am fine with in-page pop-ups especially for those bloggers who want to promote their own products or share some important news. But those that keep popping up ads in new tab are really annoying. Moreover, I don't know how effective it is for those pop-up advertisements, as whenever it pops-up, I quickly close it without even letting it load or looking at the contents. I also have the feeling that the contents shown in pop-up ads might not be reliable, hence I usually won't bother to read it. I understand advertisements help to bring in more revenue, but I think the website owners have to show them wisely and not disturb or annoy the visitors.
