Perhaps you've done this.

You are using a search engine to find information. Click on a link that will lead you to the place where you'll find the answers you seek. Once you land on the site you realize this person's content fails to answer any of your questions. Instead they are trying to sell you their ebook which supposedly contains what you want.

Would you buy that ebook? I don't think you would especially if this information won't cost you a penny elsewhere on the net. This is one marketing strategy which is counterproductive in my opinion but unfortunately many bloggers still use it hoping they'll sell more ebooks this way.

Which other marketing or monetization strategies do you think could hurt your blog?

That's something that drives me nuts. I totally get that for most people, their website needs to create a profit, and selling ebooks is not a big deal to me - they can be really useful. But when it's something that directs you RIGHT to the ebook sale without actually trying to help you out just feels like a blatant, forced cash grab.

I'm more inclined to buy something if I feel like I've had a chance to connect with the blog first, rather than just feeling like I'm being hit in the face with ads to buy.

I agree with you, I know a lot of sites that do that and it is really annoying, since it feels like it force you ti buy it.

Yes, like having some promotions on the product that they are selling, even if the price itself is the same price as it was when it's not on sale.

I agree with you. I have experienced such thing and I need liked it. Though I understand that they are doing it to make money, they also should understand how a "visitor" feels.

That’s also how I look at it. I don’t mind that sites want to sell their ebooks, that’s totally normal. Sometimes the approach they take just ends up feeling rude. Like you said they should take into account how a visitor feels. Trying to see that a new reader to a site doesn’t necessarily want ads to buy something shoved down their throat is important!

For blogs that are obviously having a camouflage but the main motive is selling, I guess it would not really get good sales because the reader would be turned off. It is like the street vendors that would be helpful to you when there is heavy traffic on the road. They will give you a direction so you can make a detour and avoid the traffic but when you are into the details the vendor would force you to buy what he is selling.

It really makes me upset when I'm looking for something online, only to find out that they just want you to buy their E-book. There's nothing wrong with that, but is it hard to share the answer to a single question and just promote the whole book after? You know, customers will really buy it if they need it. Whatever tactics that you show online, if a customer doesn't want it, he will really not have it. He would opt to find another site

IMO, I think some of this hard to answer questions are the ones people should be answering on their blogs. Since the answers aren't available elsewhere on the net, your site will draw all that traffic. You could probably still make money selling something else.

There are times you should give something away free. Bait. You lose nothing.

Most people search the internet to look for free that will somehow solve to their problems. When they arrived a website that is full of promotional content and will just sell them, chances are they will immediately push the back button and leave.

Well, I don't have a habit of paying for information that I can get for free. Yes, I have been led to a link that is promoting an eBook. Would I buy it? If I really wanted the answer and there was no place where I could get that answer, then, of course, I would buy it. In the USA, if we are monetizing our blogs and the content has affiliate links, we are required to disclose that to the site visitor. If they click a link that leads to a product, then it's no surprise. I wish I could answer the question as to which marketing or monetization strategies hurt my blog. I don't get much feedback on my blog.

Searching and thinking I found an answer only to be told the answer is in somebody's eBook is one of my pet hates. I wish there was a way of discerning what is on the end of a link. Maybe Google could colour or code links in some way so it was clear on the search page. I would not buy a book I found this way.

I agree. The main reason most people have websites is to sell. However you have to be subtle about it or this turns away most of your customers. I think that one of the things that can drive visitors away from your blog is not knowing what you are talking about. We are in the era of recognition of fake news. Do your research and get your facts right. Once your audience realize you don't know your stuff, you have lost them.

I’ve found that there are a bunch of websites that do this. They look like a blog and pull you in with some potentially useful information, and then bam— “buy my eBook to learn more.” That is exactly when I close the tab and look elsewhere.

Another thing that turns me off is excessive amounts of banner ads. Everyone wants to make money, I get that, but there is a tasteful way of doing so and then there is the annoying way. If I have to scroll past an advertisement every paragraph, I’m out.

Also, stop pushing your damned newsletters in my face all the time. I understand getting one pop-up to remind me that you have a newsletter, but if it’s constantly getting in my way then I’m just leaving the site.

I've came across these type of vlogs in the past and they're just too annoying for me especially that most of the answers they want to sell are answers that could be easily found on other free websites. However, I do understand that they want profit and etc., it's just that I guess it's not a good thing to sell something you know that others can give for free.

When using a mobile device to surf the net, after reading an article and you click on some link they hit you hard with a full page ad. It's very annoying. Since it's the site owners who choose to have such ads shown to their site visitors when they overdo it there is no good reason to hang around so you can look at more ads.

There are other sites which will block content unless you disable the adblocker you are using. Real nice way to get some of your blog visitors leave quickly. Makes people question your intentions.

Well, such blogs and vlogs are very common these days and most of them are very predictable in their pattern of working. Some of these blogs seem to be created with the sole motive of trying to lure the viewers to sale some unrelated and irrelevant product. I think that it is mostly a pathetic attempt which is bound to fail eventually. All it manages to do is to irritate the viewers who are genuinely trying to find answers to there problems.

It is outrageous to reach a particular web page that indicated an information that you are searching only to find that it is selling you something. That is a nasty way of spamming like a click bait that is obviously soliciting traffic from strangers. This discussion makes me realize that there are many kinds of blogger, from the real bloggers who blog to express their passion, bloggers for earning, bloggers for fooling people and many other categories that you can think of.

Anything that wastes my time and does not help my inquiry in any way. This includes ads that randomly appear from everywhere, annoying pop-ups, a long article that beats around the bush and ends up promoting a product I am not interested in, etcetera. Sites like these are guaranteed to make me click the exit button faster than the blink of an eye.

I think real marketers know how to get the attention of their prospect buyers, to caught their interest and desire to make their buyers buy their product. Some ebook seller try different ideas to sell their products but they don't know that at some point, their strategy becomes annoying.

That is honestly one of the annoying things you can come across with when looking for an answer. I don't mind if they're selling but at least answer the question and have option to read more on the topic by buying the book. I think it definitely hurts a blog more than it would help.
